The IGBR 2019 Fall Conference in Las Vegas has drawn to a close. We received so much positive feedback from the participants that it made it clear that IGBR is fulfilling its mission to support authors by providing them with constructive feedback that will further their expertise and broaden their field of knowledge, without diminishing their enthusiasm or confidence. We believe that the most effective way to further the body of knowledge in any field is to provide a supportive environment where collegial communication is maintained. Based on the feedback we received, everyone had a great session and left feeling encouraged and enthusiastic. So, we would like to thank all of you for participating and bringing your supportive enthusiasm into the sessions.

The IGBR Board of Directors gives special thanks to the Conference Proceedings Chairman, Dr. Bob Hatfield, for overseeing the review process for the proceedings papers submitted to the conference, and thanks to the Conference Program Chair, Dr. Julio Rivas, for creating the program and organizing the sessions. Dr. Rivas has graciously volunteered to be the Program Chair for the Spring Conference in New Orleans (April 8-10, 2020), so he will be sending out conference related announcements in the coming months.

At each conference, the IGBR presents a number of awards. Below is a description of those awards and a list of the award winners. In the meantime, don’t forget the next IGBR conference in New Orleans on April 8-10, 2020.

JoAnn C. Carland Distinguished Service Award

Dr. JoAnn C. Carland was a scholar, researcher, and educator with a vision to support researchers from teaching universities. She was a scholar in the field of entrepreneurship and was one of the most cited authors in that field. She was the founder and president of an academic organization with a mission to encourage research with a collegial atmosphere and supportive culture. JoAnn modeled this because she always was the most encouraging participant at any conference. The IGBR was founded on these same core values. The IGBR board created this award in the memory of JoAnn Carland. This award is bestowed on individuals who have provided unwavering support and dedication to the IGBR mission.

Dr. Julio Rivas, Lipscomb University

Julio was one of the founding members of the IGBR and was at the initial planning meeting where the new organization and its journals were conceived. He has provided unwavering support from the beginning and served as the Program Chair for the Las Vegas conference, and has graciously volunteered to serve as the Program Chair for the 2020 New Orleans conference as well. You can expect to hear more from him in the coming months as we gear up for the next meeting.

Institute for Global Business Research Fellow Award

These individuals have been supporters and ambassadors of the IGBR. They have encouraged attendance at the conferences, worked as Referees and Advocates, and taken on extra duties on behalf of the organization. They have been great friends and colleagues, and are clearly worthy of Fellow status.

Dr. Stephen C. Betts, William Paterson University
Dr. Larry Pleshko, Kuwait University

Both Stephen and Larry have been to every meeting of the IGBR and have shared their enthusiasm with their colleagues. Stephen’s love for the organization and what it stands for is evident in his sharing with others. Larry, who travels all the way from Kuwait to be with us, also loves this group and does his part to make sure everyone has a good time. Thank you both for your ongoing support.

Editor Appreciation Award

Being a Journal Editor can be a thankless job, but it’s one of the most important jobs in an academic organization like IGBR. Editors are dedicated to maintaining a double-blind, peer review process that is rigorous but supportive. Their job is to help authors improve their papers, even if that means making multiple revisions. In an attempt to express our gratitude for the time, energy and dedication to the core mission of the IGBR, we would like to present the Editor Appreciation Award to…

Dr. DK “Skip” Smith, Baze University

Distinguished Research Award Winners

The awards committee performs a separate blind review of the papers submitted for journal consideration. They rank the papers submitted and the top papers are selected to receive Distinguished Research Awards. There were a lot of great papers, but these were the ones the awards committee selected:

  2. The IGBR Conference in Las Vegas was outstanding. This is the first time that I took two students to a conference and it was an exceptionally rewarding experience for all three of us. We enjoyed the papers which were both informative and interesting. The social hour and awards dinner allowed us to really get to know others in attendance. We all remarked that you could never find more interesting, friendly, and entertaining people than those that attended this conference. The was the first trip to Las Vegas for my two students, Taylore and Brianna, and both of them totally enjoyed the conference and all of the wonderful participants. I have attended Allied and IGBR for many years and hope to attend many more in the future. I highly recommend this conference to any educator and if you have never attended one in the past, please attend an IGBR conference in the future. I guarantee that you will enjoy the experience.
